Executive Program > Mutually Beneficial Relationships In The Video Industry
This week I read about two instances where video program providers sought to protect the value of their shows when the distribution of the programming did not have a mutually beneficial relationship.
Case 1) Television's Power Shift: Cable Pays for 'Free' Shows Broadcasters Want Cash To Carry Their Signal; Super Bowl Is Hostage (WSJ 2/5/07). Broadcast stations want cable companies to pay for the privilege of carrying the broadcaster’s programming.
Case 2) Viacom Orders Removal Of Videos From YouTube (WSJ 2/3/07) Well, the headline speaks for itself.
What is the management key for program providers to recognize revenue as business models change? According to Informa Telecoms & Media’s Media Research Manager: co-operation.
As we struggle with emerging business models, we will need to tune our skills at negotiating and creating mutually beneficial relationships within our economic ecosystems.

In contrast, I also came across information from a recently released report from Informa Telecoms & Media’s regarding online TV and video services. (http://www.broadcastbuyer.tv/publish/Internet_33/Online_TV_Revenues_To_Increase_Tenfold_10384.shtml) I began salivating as I read that revenue generated from online TV and video services will increase 10-fold to $6.3 billion in 2012.
